Filming of the seal on Cape Cod prompt investigation

TRURO, Massachusetts (AP) - Federal authorities are investigating the shooting of a grey seal located on Cape Cod beaches earlier this month.

Authorities say the adult male seal was spotted on October 2 and euthanized two days more oone autopsy revealed that the animal was shot several times in the head.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration investigator Todd Nickerson tells the Cape Cod Times, while that not regarded as a species endangered by federal legislation, grey seals are protected by federal Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.

Animals swim in the waters of New England year-round.

The gunman is recognized guilty faces a fine up to $100,000 and up to a year behind bars.
